NL‑ix introduces the SCION Exchange, a new way for organisations to exchange data securely and reliably. Available from all NL‑ix locations across Europe, the SCION Exchange allows networks to communicate over trusted and controlled connections — offering a safer alternative to the traditional Internet.
In order to do this, NL-ix has partnered with Anapaya. By integrating Anapaya's SCION technology into our extensive interconnection platform, we now offer a sovereign DDoS-resilient, and route-controlled alternative to traditional Internet routing.
What is SCION?
SCION is a next-generation Internet architecture developed to make online communication more secure and predictable. Instead of data taking unknown routes across the Internet, SCION ensures that information only travels over verified and controlled paths. This gives organisations much greater control over where their data goes and how it is handled.
We believe SCION represents a fundamental shift in how we use and secure the Internet. By launching a SCION Exchange in Western Europe and making it available through our pan-European network, we’re making this technology accessible to organisations that prioritise security and control.

How SCION Works at NL‑ix
The NL‑ix SCION Exchange provides a separate, secure layer within the NL‑ix infrastructure. Through SCION routers, participants can connect with other networks that also use SCION and exchange data securely. This creates a closed, trusted ecosystem for interconnection — all built on NL‑ix’s extensive European backbone.
What Does This Mean for NL‑ix Customers?
As an NL‑ix customer, you can now access a dedicated SCION network and, through SCION routers, securely connect and exchange traffic with other organisations that are part of this same secure ecosystem — without going through the public Internet.
It’s simple to join: you can connect with a new, dedicated port, or add SCION as an extra VLAN on your existing NL‑ix port. Once connected, your organisation can immediately start communicating with other SCION-enabled networks across Europe.
The NL‑ix SCION Exchange is available across all NL‑ix Points of Presence (PoPs) in Europe, leveraging our low-latency, high-availability infrastructure.
Europe is home to some of the most advanced and interconnected digital ecosystems in the world. Partnering with NL-ix allows us to extend the benefits of SCION – such as security, trust, and reliability – to a wider range of ISPs and enterprises.
