A year of growth, innovation and community

2025 was a year where everything came together: strong traffic growth, major network upgrades, new technologies, knowledge sharing and meaningful community moments. In NL-ix Wrapped 2025, we look back at the highlights that shaped our network and our community.

Record-breaking traffic peaks

Demand for scalable, resilient interconnection continued to grow throughout the year — and it showed. In 2025, NL-ix broke its own traffic-peak record three times, reaching a new high of 12.27 Tb/s.
These milestones reflect the trust our participants place in the NL-ix platform and reinforce the importance of continuously investing in capacity, stability and performance.

Network upgrades across Europe

To support this growth, we significantly expanded our backbone capacity in 2025. Key upgrades included:

• Amsterdam ↔ Frankfurt: upgraded from 2×1.2T to soon 2×2.0T
• Marseille: from 2×400G to 2×800G
• Additional capacity via third ports at multiple locations
• Berlin: +200G
• Copenhagen: +200G

Altogether, this resulted in 3.4 Terabit of additional backbone capacity added in a single year — providing more headroom, resilience and future-proof connectivity across Europe.

SCION Exchange

In 2025, NL-ix took an important step toward the future of secure interconnection with the launch of SCION Exchange.
SCION introduces greater control, transparency and security in routing, complementing existing internet architectures. With this exchange, we work together with our community to explore new paths toward a more robust and trustworthy internet.

Creating a new generation of BGP masters

Knowledge sharing remained a core focus for NL-ix in 2025. Our BGP courses were more successful than ever, with fully booked sessions and highly engaged participants.
From fundamentals to hands-on labs, we helped network engineers truly understand and apply BGP in real-world environments — creating a new generation of BGP masters in the process.

Integrated, state-of-the-art DDoS protection

As DDoS attacks continue to grow in size, sophistication and frequency, NL-ix introduced a powerful new way to protect participants and their infrastructure. With NL-ix DDoS Protection, powered by Nokia Deepfield Defender, we transform our network into a self-defending platform that detects and mitigates threats in real time — directly within the NL-ix fabric.

Unlike traditional approaches that rely on external scrubbing centers, this solution uses AI-driven analytics and inline mitigation on NL-ix’s own backbone. This means:

• Always-on attack detection and response, with mitigation in seconds
• No traffic detours to third-party scrubbing centers, preserving privacy and performance
• Integrated protection directly in our high-capacity network
• Real-time visibility via ICON, so you can see attacks and responses live

This milestone marks a major step forward in NL-ix’s evolution — offering secure, privacy-first protection alongside connectivity, and enabling participants to focus on their strategic priorities, not constant firefighting.

London PoP upgrade

In 2025, NL-ix significantly upgraded its London Point of Presence, strengthening London’s role as a key gateway between the UK and mainland Europe.
The upgrade increased backbone capacity to 1.7 Tb/s, delivering improved scalability, lower latency and higher resilience for participants connecting in London. This enhancement further reinforces NL-ix’s pan-European footprint and supports growing traffic demand across borders.

Community, face to face: Late Summer Drink

At its core, technology is about people. During the Late Summer Drink 2025, network professionals came together on the beach in Scheveningen.
In a relaxed setting, conversations flowed, connections were strengthened, and new ideas emerged — exactly what a community event is all about.
