Sip-X

What is SIP-X?

SIP-X is the SIP-based voice interconnect platform used within the KPN voice network. It enables service providers, operators, and large enterprises to connect their own voice platforms to the KPN telephony infrastructure using IP.

Through this interconnection, providers can:

• Terminate voice traffic to the Dutch fixed and mobile networks
• Originate calls from their own subscribers
• Deliver inbound numbers and voice services to customers
• Scale call capacity as demand grows

The platform uses SIP for call signaling and IP routing for traffic exchange.

Private VLAN Connectivity

Connectivity to SIP-X network is delivered through a dedicated VLAN on the NL-ix platform. For each participant, NL-ix provisions a private Layer 2 VLAN from the customer’s NL-ix port to the respective service environment.

This VLAN creates a direct and isolated connection between the participant network and the SIP-X platform. Traffic exchanged over this connection remains separated from other services on the NL-ix infrastructure.

Once the VLAN is established, participants can configure their own network routing and service connectivity across this private link. This allows voice or healthcare application traffic to be exchanged with the platform over a controlled, dedicated path.

BGP-Based Voice Interconnection

Connectivity to SIP-X uses BGP for routing.

Using BGP enables dynamic and resilient routing between networks, and allows to integrate SIP-X connectivity directly into existing network architecture.

Voice signaling and media traffic flow across the established IP paths once routing is in place.
