Routing

Apart from providing Public Peering ports, NL-ix is also very supportive in getting our members optimal routing and peering relations over that port. In here we provide several flavours of support:

• Do-It-Yourself Bilateral Peering
• Managed Peering
• Route Server
• Multi Lateral Peering Agreement (MLPA)
• NL Routing
• Global Transit

Do-It-Yourself Bilateral Peering

As is custom on Internet Exchanges, you can negotiate with other individual Exchange Members to set up bilateral peering. NL-ix supports this effort in several ways:

1. Offering itself as an initital peer to set up the first bilateral peering session with (as an example and test);
2. Publishing members on the NL-ix Member List for other members to be seen;
3. Publishing the peering policy and contact information of new customers on the (My-) NL-ix website for existing members to use;
4. Announcing new members in an email to all existing members once the connection is into production;
5. Giving new members access to the 'announce' mailing list so they can announce themselves and their willingness to peer in the form of an inviation to alle other members;
6. Giving new members access to the list with peerings policies and contact information of all existing members on (My-) NL-ix;
7. Supporting the PeeringDB effort where networks can register their peering contact, policy and other details as applicable over multiple Internet Exchanges;
8. Registering all members on the European Internet Exchange Association (EuroIX) website.

Managed Peering

Instead of negotiating with over 200 Members, NL-ix also offers a Managed Peering service in which case NL-ix partner Open peering takes care of negotiating, implementing and maintaining the various peerings for you.

This service is offered in a 'Full' (all members) and a less expensive 'Top-25' (only the largest members) variant. Managed Peering can done as Initial Setup project only, or as a continued Support service.

Route Server

The Route Servers are an NL-ix based routing facility where members with an open peering policy can automatically subscribe to a route-server with the prefixes of all other NL-ix members with an open peering policy.

Multi Lateral Peering Agreement (MLPA)

MLPA is a more advanced agreement between a certain group of providers on several regional Internet exchanges (AMS-IX, GNIX, NL-ix) that all have an open peering policy. Exchange members can join the MLPA by signing this agreement on the Open Peering (which implements the MLPA) website and setting up a one-time peering session with the MLPA router.

NL Routing

In cooperation with our sister company Open Peering, we can add Full NL Routing to your NL-ix port.

With NL Routing you get close to 100% coverage of all the NL-based providers, and even some more. It is a turn-key solution: you do not need to negotiate and setup direct peers yourself anymore (although you still can).

Please note that this NL Routing, especially at large volumes, is much cheaper than Global Transit, and even more attractive if you have an NL-ix port already. For large users with specific requirements and traffic characteristics, like Usenet Providers, a specialized form called Bulk NL Routing is available,

Global Transit

Multiple carriers in the NL-ix Global Transit Community offer full global routing based on Global (Internet) Transit.

Global (Internet) Transit
A Transit service provides advertisement of your routes (IP addresses) to the entire Internet (attracting incomming traffic), and worldwide routing (of outgoing traffic) from your network to all prefixes on the Internet. See Wikipedia for an extensive description of what a Global (Internet) Transit is.

Global Transit Carriers on NL-ix customly use the BandMarket service delivery solution to distribute their service to all NL-ix datacenters.

For existing NL-ix members it is interesting to have access to the services of a diverse group of carriers in the Global Transit community. Often this service can technically be combined with an existing NL-ix port. If so, this Global Routing is even cheaper. Sometimes a dedicated port is required.

OnePort™ concept
As almost all of our solutions, the NL Routing and Global Transit are delivered via the NL-ix OnePort™. This port is the basic product for all NL-ix Peering and Community solutions and can also be used in combination with the NL-ix Metro Ethernet solutions.

By purchasing an NL-ix Port, most of the Peering and Community services become available for free, and/or additional Metro-Ethernet services will be much cheaper. Port speeds of 100 Mbit/s, 1.000 Mbit/s and 10 Gbit/s can be provided.
