Metro & Carrier Ethernet

Metro Ethernet is an NL-ix service whereby customers can apply dedicated ethernet VLAN connections between any two, or more, datacenter locations covered by NL-ix.

The Carrier Ethernet variant of the product covers any location in Holland as long as the central location is a NL-ix covered datacenter.

Metro Ethernet services are the most cost efficient way we offer to interconnect datacenters takeing full advantage of economy of scale being provided by the shared NL-ix platform.

This service is ideally fitted for:

  1. Intra network solutions: easy, fast and cost-effective expansion of your network;
  2. Extra network solutions: interconnect of multiple parties, often within specific communities, together on a dedicated VLAN-topology.

NL-ix ports can be interconnected via dedicated VLAN(s) in either Metro Ethernet point-point, or star-, or ring- or cloud- topologies. Customers can burst upto the port speed, without overbooking on pre-reserved capacity.

One Mac per VLAN/port
Metro-Ethernet requires customers to connect only layer-3 equipment (routers) on each port and allows one single MAC address per port, which is enforced using port security technology.

Metro Ethernet supports standard size ethernet packets with 1500 bytes ethernet packet payload, (and 14 bytes ethernet header plus 4 byte ethernet CRC trailer) which means that dot1.q trunking, q-in-q, Jumbo Frames and MPLS are not supported.

If you are interested in a layer-2 LAN, and/or larger MTU's, and/or dot1.q trunking, you may have a look at our Metro Wave or Metro Fiber solutions.

OnePort™ concept
As almost all of our services, the Metro Ethernet services are delivered via the NL-ix Port. This port is the basic product for all NL-ix Peering and Community solutions and can also be used in combination with the NL-ix BandMarket solutions.
By purchasing an NL-ix Port, most of the Peering and Community services become available for free, and/or additional Metro-Ethernet services will be much cheaper. Speeds of 100 Mbit/s, 1.000 Mbit/s and 10 Gbit/s can be provided.

See the Metro MPLS, Metro Pipe, Metro Wave and Metro Fiber services for alternatives for Metro Ethernet.
See our Pricing Sheet for the current charges.
