NL-ix ExchangePublic PeeringThe NL-ix Internet Exchange is a shared and distributed infrastructure where ISP's can negotiate peering and exchange mutual Internet traffic. Local peering improves performance and saves bandwidth and inherently money on International transit capacity. NL-ix offers Internet Exchange connections at several Dutch datacenters. Ports are available at 100 Mbit/s, 1.000 Mbit/s and 10 Gbit/s speeds. Access to the IPv4 peering VLAN is included in the port price. Pricing
Save costs on International trafficBy peering on NL-ix, an ISP can locally offload traffic with a national destination that is behind antoher ISP on NL-ix. Each packet that can be delivered over NL-ix directly saves bandwidth and inherently money on International transit. Shorter routes, lower delay, less congestionIf Internet traffic is routed via expensive International transit connections, cost is not the only issue. Traffic will also be hit with a roundtrip delay of around 100 milliseconds (ms) and possibly substially higher in case of congestion. By local peering on NL-ix traffic can be routed with a delay of 1 ms or less. Considering the bandwidth of NL-ix and NL-ix access ports, congestion is very improbable. As the route a packet takes over NL-ix is substantially shorter (there are less 'hops' in the path), the risk of instabilities and loss of the packet on the way is minimized, ReliableNL-ix infrastructure is based on dedicated fibers between the NL-ix datacenters. All switches and fibers are monitored permanently. In case irregularities or outages NL-ix maintainers are automatically signaled. Maintainers are availble for customer calls 24 hours a day through different shifts. Help with peeringAs setting up peerings with other ISP's is essential for the effectivity of a NL-ix connection, NL-ix supports connectees in this process. On the NL-ix website a secured list of email adresses of all member ISP's peering coordinators is offered. Furthermore on the exchange a optional multi-lateral peering (MLPA) is in place (operated by the Open Peering Initiative). On NL-ix the MLPA gives you free access to all other members via a single peering agreement and a single peering session (BGP4). |
