Community Efforts

NL-ix supports community efforts to maintain and improve the Internet with free ports or other applicable forms of support. Applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Below a list of currently sponsored initiatives in random order.

K-rootserver (RIPE)

Nameing and numbering (domain name and IP address conversion) on the Internet is founded upon a 13 (named A through M) DNS root name servers, a function which is critical for the day-to-day operation of the Internet.

From these 13, since 1997 the "K" root servers are operated by the RIPE NCC under AS number AS25152 with 18 servers (5 with global scope and 13 with local scope) reachable under anycast addresses 193.0.14.129 and 2001:7fd::1.

NL-ix supports RIPE with a free NL-ix peering port and free routing to 70.000 destinations in and around The Netherlands makeing the Amsterdam K root server node (a node with a global scope) widely available.

A briefing on the general operation of the DNS root server system is available at: DNS Root Name Servers Explained For Non-Experts, by Daniel Karrenberg. More info can also be found on Wikipedia.

F-rootserver (ISC)

Since 1994 the "F" root servers are operated by the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) under AS number AS3557 (in Amsterdam local AS number AS30132) with 49 servers (2 with global scope and 47 with local scope) reachable under anycast addresses 192.5.5.241 and 2001:500:2f::f.

NL-ix supports ISC with a free NL-ix peering port and free routing to 70.000 destinations in and around The Netherlands makeing the Amsterdam F root server node widely available.

RIS (RIPE)

The RIPE Routing Information Service (RIS) is a project that collects and stores Internet routing data from serveral locations around the globe. RIS offers tools that bring this data to the Internet community.

Submit a ASN or prefix on the dashboard and see what RIS knows about it!

NL-ix supports RIPE with a free NL-ix peering port and free routing to 70.000 destinations in and around The Netherlands enabling the Amsterdam RIS node to widely monitor prefixes in the global routing table.

Respect My Privacy

Respect My Privacy is a non profit assosiation founded under Dutch law that provides information about privacy, data retention and censorship, but also supplies ways for anonymous internet access.

Anonymous internet access can especially be important for journalists (foreign correspondents in countries where freedom of press is limited), bloggers about sensitive topics (like politics, religion, civil unrest) and researchers that do research in controversial topics like censorship, cloning and biotechnology.

NL-ix supports RMP with a free NL-ix peering port, free routing to 70.000 destinations in and around The Netherlands and free AS number and IP space registration and maintenance with RIPE, helping RMP in its effort to provide anonymous internet access.

DALnet IRC

The DALnet IRC network is an internet relay chat (IRC) network with aroung 30.000 users which is dedicated to providing a safe and friendly environment in which to chat. DALnet exists soley upon the goodwill of others.

DALnet is peering on NL-ix on IP address 193.239.116.162 under AS number AS31800 and is nowadays anycast based using 40+ servers.

NL-ix supports RMP with a free NL-ix peering port.

Packet Clearing House

Packet Clearing House (PCH) is a non-profit research institute that supports operations and analysis in the areas of Internet traffic exchange, routing economics, and global network development.

PCH is peering on NL-ix on IP address 193.239.116.123 under AS number AS42 and on IP address 193.239.116.122 under AS number AS3856.

NL-ix supports PCH with a free NL-ix peering port.

MultiLateral peering Agreement

Open Peering provides a free MLPA service including a standard MLPA agreement, a registry where particpants register the fact that they have signed the agreement and are networks with an open peering policy, and an implementation of the MLPA over NL-ix, whereby NL-ix members which have signed can freely receive the routes of all other MLPA participants on NL-ix, AMS-IX and GN-IX. Check the site to see which (100+) parties already participate in the MLPA.

NL-ix supports the MLPA of Open Peering with a free NL-ix peering port.
